A great war-date Union 6th Corps Hospital document, 3pp. large folio, pre-printed being "Report of Sick and Wounded, 6th Corps Hospital" for May 1863 including casualties from the battle of Chancellorsville. This document was compiled by the surgeon in charge of the Army of the Potomac's Sixth Corps field hospital, Henry Janes. Janes later gained fame as the surgeon who eventually oversaw the daily operations of Gettysburg's Camp Letterman Hospital. On the first page virtually every known form of malady, injury or accidental affliction is accounted for numerically. Examples of these cases include: five cases of syphilis; one case of epithelial cancer; three cases of dry gangrene; three cases of inflammation of the tonsils; seven simple fractures; 48 compound fractures; 1021 gunshot wounds and even one poisoning. Of the 1775 patients admitted to the hospital in May there were 69 deaths. On the top of page two there is a "Tabular Statement of Gun-Shot Wounds". This section lists every possible body part the soldier/patient was wounded in. For instance, there were a total of eight cases gunshot wounds in the intestines; an equal number for each side of the body. On the bottom half of page two is a "List of Operations" while the entire third page includes a list of the hospital's 69 deaths. This list includes the soldier's name, his regiment regiment and his wound and/or operation which resulted in his death. Some of the unfortunate men include: Pvt. Orin Gifford 125th New York who died after his leg was amputated; Corp. Edward McAnnally by gunshot wound in thigh; Pvt. A. A. Doer 6th Maine of gunshot wounds in hip and thigh; Pvt. Peter King 5th Vermont by amputation of the left thigh and, among others, Joseph R. Gray of the 7th Louisiana who died after suffering a fractured left thigh. Much more like content. Minor toning, else VG
