A great war-date Union Brevet Brigadier General's report, 3pp. 4to., signed by Bvt. Brig. Gen. JULIUS HAYDEN (1820-1878), "Headquarters 3rd Army Corps, Office of the Asst. Inspr. General, [Virginia], Sept. 15, 1863, concerning the upkeep of the ambulance corps, reading, in part: "In accordance with directions from the major general commanding you will make a careful inspection of the ambulance train…you will require the ambulance officer to have his horses harnessed and attached to the ambulances-officers and non-commissioned officers present mounted, that each ambulance is in good order and neatly kept, that it has a water bucket, tar pot…and two stretchers, that the wheels have the appearance of having been lately greased, that the water kegs are cleaned and filled with fresh water, that the ambulances are only used for the transportation of the sick and wounded…in addition to the deriver, each ambulance has two stretcher-bearers who are properly instructed in their duties and regularly drilled…Medical and Army wagons. That the covers and bows of the wagons are good, that they are supplied with feed troughs, water buckets, tar pots, whips, curry combs and horse brushes…that the saddles and harnesses show care for their preservation, that the animals are in good condition and well shod…J.
