Another Whitworth eight page letter datelined Camp Near Stevensburg, Dec 27/63, with the original cover, written to his sister. In part, : “Our company numbered 506 men in all, the largest it has been since last June. ... Major Kiss is in command ... the report is that Kilpatrick and Custer are to the Western department. You have probably heard of the death of Major General Buford ... the government will the loss of so good an officer.... there has been a great deal of hard fighting around here .. A grave here and there be speaks the sacrifice of some brave and noble hereos that has fell while nobly defending the flag of his countey. ... The boys say that they can see the Rebs on the other side of the river. They have their posts close together. I believe they have to guard their own men from deserting. A few days ago three started to come in to our lines ... and then one of them was shot by their own men. .. they reported that they had to keep up a strict watch to keep their men from deserting ... they come in such ragged, forlorn looking fellows ... some of them state that they has not tasted coffee in two years ....”
