BLAIR, Austin (1818-1894) also known as the Civil War Governor, was a politician from Michigan. He was known as a strong opponent of slavery and secession and he also championed human rights by leading the effort to ban capital punishment and supporting efforts to give women and black citizens the right to vote. Document Signed, 10-1/2” x 15,” “Austin Blair” as Governor, December 20, 1864, being a military appointment issued to William R. Noble to First Lieutenant in the Fifth Regiment, Michigan Cavalry. The preprinted document is very ornate, retains full seal and is near fine condition.
