A good war-date Union surgeon's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Asst. Surgeon William C. Towle 12th Maine Vols., Camp Parapet, [Carrolton, La.], Apr. 27, 1864, to his wife, in part: "…you wrote as though they were expecting Capt. F[arrington] home with the Regt. He did not go as Gen. Reynolds, on whose staff he is, could not spare him. He is the principle officer and has the management of…most if the business. He is liked very much by all who have business with him. Jim has been detached from his regt. goes to Lark Part 5 or 6 miles from here within the detachment of their regt which were left behind when they went home. About 400 wounded have been sent north from the hospital n the city. Quite a number from the Maine Regts…Gen. Banks is falling back on Alexandria and…the Rebels are between him and the mouth of the Red River. He has failed disastrously…thus far…we hope he will make a more successful affair of it next time. All eyes are now turned toward Gen. Grant for with the Army of the Potomac in a great measure now rests the results of the spring campaign and perhaps the integrity of our Union. Military success…is what we must have. Everything depends on it and if we fail…the Confederacy will be stronger then ever…I suppose they are enforcing the draft…I am fortunate to be out of the way of it this time...W. C. Towle…". The original transmittal cover is included. A bit light, but readable, else VG
