At Danville there were four buildings used as Prisons. ... these were tobacco warehouses. ... The officer in command was Major Morfirt. ... when we first entered the Prison our rations were quite tolerable ... but after the supply was exhausted we had but little meat and from Dec/64 until Feb/65 we had not a mouthfull. ... Our sufferings during the winter were intense, we being obliged frequently to walk the building the entire night to keep the blood in circulation... some that succeeded in getting away from the Prison were brought back ... in a very pitiable and weak condition ... When we left Danville for parole, we were crowded into box cars, 84 being in the car in which I was. In one car four men died. ... We remained in Richmond three days when we left, having one of our comrades died on the floor and one more died upon the boat ... and many more died soon after reaching Annapolis ....”
