Galvanized Yankee two page letter written by ‘Charles D. Jacobs, Private Co. C. 40th N.J.V.,” datelined Camp 40th N. Jersey Vols. 1st Brig. 1st Div. 6th Army Corps, February 16th, 1865,. In large part, he writes, “Having been a telegraph operator in the service of the Rebel Government during the first and second years of the war, and while in charge of the telegraph office and ‘Electric Machine’ upon Sullivan’s Island, Charleston S.C. harbor placed there to explode torpedoes. I was suspected of treachery and giving aid to the Union fleet under Admiral Dupunt which attacked the forts in that harbor in the spring of 1863… I then proceeded to Washington and made a statement to the War Department giving the location of prominent torpedoes in that harbor and other information which I possessed on account of the many advantages I had in being a telegrapher. I went farther north and worked at my occupation until lately, when my mother and two brothers having also made their way over and relying upon my support which I was unable to give at that time. I under the impulse of the moment enlisted in this regiment 40th N.J. Vols. Company “C” principally to alleviate their wants. ....”
