A good war-date Union surgeon's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Asst. Surgeon William C. Towle 12th Maine Veteran Battalion, Savannah, Ga., Jan. 29, 1865, to his wife, in part: "…having the care of two Regts situated in different parts of the city takes the most of the time…we have got to leave our nice barrack…they are going to take them for division hospital…I was awakened from my submerse about midnight by the bursting of shells and my first thought were that the Rebels were coming. Some 90 buildings were destroyed among them the arsenal containing upwards of 4,000 shells, the explosions of which were terrific. A number of persons were killed by the pieces which flew over nearly the whole city. I was out for a short time but a piece of shell coming rather nearer to my head than I desired…I wisely concluded to return to my lodgings. It was without doubt the work of an incendiary…Rebel or sympathizer with their cause. Sherman' army has all gone. They will probably be heard from in S. Carolina next. I was talking with a citizen a day or two ago in regard to the feling of the people toward us. He told me that many of the inhabitants of Savannah were New England people, that they were very loth to give up the old Union and that they now secretly rejoiced at the expulsion of the Rebs…but still they dare not express themselves for it is not among the impossibilities…that they may be subjected to Rebel rule again…Wm. C. Towle." Minor toning, else VG.
