A good war-date Union surgeon's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Asst. Surgeon William C. Towle 12th Maine Veteran Battalion, Savannah, Ga., Mar. 28, 1865, to his wife, in part: "…I have no small pox [cases]…or anything of the kind…I avoid the night air as much as possible…I recede an order from Gen. Grover to visit some Confederate officers outside the lines. A Col., Lt. Col. & Capt. came under a 'Flag of Truce' to make arrangements, if they could, for the exchange of prisoners at this place. One of them was taken sick-diarrhea and I went to attend him. They greeted me very cordially and treated me very politely and gentlemanly. They were fine looking men and I really felt sad…that they could be engaged in such a unrighteous and wicked rebellion which has caused so much suffering and laid desolate the most beautiful portion of our land. If the leaders could be the only ones to suffer it would be serving them right, but the majority of the people are misinformed as to the true state of feeling in the North. They have received what little they know from the Secessionists of the South. It is not at all strange that the people think as they do. It is what they have been taught, but the Lincoln sentiment is gaining ground and most certain too whenever our people are brought in contact with the sober minded, sensible people of the South…'new recruits' how sick they are. I hope the next companies will be an improvement on the last one. Those examining surgeons should be more particular in passing men into the service. Some of them will catch it before long. What started Bill Howe to enlist?…Wm. C. Towle." The original transmittal cover is included. Minor toning, else VG.
