War-date Confederate soldier’s Autograph Letter Signed by Captain John A. Mackey, Co. B, 2nd Tennesse Infantry, 4pp. quarto, Camp Holmes, Near Evansport, Virginia, September 25, 1861, and reads in part: “...we have heard the constant roaring of the cannons for 3 days, but we can not hear what it is about. We are not allowed to go outside of the guard line & not allowed to talk loud. We are posted at this point....I can not tell now as it is forbidden by the General. But I will tell you be quiet for a few days & then you will hear. You will hear from the Tennessee Boys...we will show our hands in two or three days. We heard yesterday that 3 companies of Lincoln’s men run through Tennessee Regiments and Maney’s Regiment was one of them, the Regiment that Lovney’s Company belongs to before they left home & heard them say that they could whip ten to one & that they wanted to get hold of the seventh New York Regiment but that Regiment was cut to pieces at Manassas. When they run from them three Companies of Lincoln’s men, they left their guns wheich are now in Lincoln’s possession. I think if they can’t do better than that, they had better go home & stay there. Col. Bate laughed at Col. Maney for being such a coward, but I don’t belive that they run. Some of them might have been killed but surely they did not run...” Fine condition.
