War-date Documents Signed, includes: Tredegar Iron Works imprint signed E.R. Archer, Capt. Comdg. , March 14, 1862, 1pp. oblong octavo, and reads in part: “...Lieut Wm C. Ammons is emplyed on arms, ammunition, another munitions of war for the State of Virginia and Confederate States and is a Lieut of Co. ‘D’ of the Tredegar (8th) Battalion.” Very good condition...plus; Partly printed Document Signed “Thos J. Moncure, 1pp. oblong octavo, August 9, 1862, Richmond, Virginia, and reads in part “...William C. Ammons Regiment of Virginia Militia, who reported as a Conscript...is hereby honorably discharged from the operation of the Conscript Act, because of being employed on Government Work at the Tredegar Iron Works...” About very good condition. (2 items) The Tredegar Iron Works in Richmond, Virginia, was the biggest ironworks in the Confederacy during the American Civil War, and a significant factor in the decision to make Richmond its capital. Tredegar supplied about half the artillery used by the Confederate States Army, as well as the iron plating for CSS Virginia, the first Confederate ironclad warship, which fought in the historic Battle of Hampton Roads in March 1862.
