War-date Confederate sailor’s Autograph Letter Signed “On Board Steamer Merrimac” October 23-26, 1862, 8pp. octavo, with nice one page map on verso, with good seafaring content, includes in smal part: “...Yesterday we spoke [to] the Steamer Mississippi and as she came up along side, it was a grand signt to see the huge sea monster glide up to us and to upwards of a thousand souls all on deck forming a human covering to the vessel...This is the sight of a life time and one which will never grow dull in my picture gallery of memory...” More. Fine condition.USS Merrimack, also improperly Merrimac, was a frigate, best known as the hull upon which the ironclad warship CSS Virginia was constructed during the American Civil War. The CSS Virginia then took part in the Battle of Hampton Roads (also known as "the Battle of the Monitor and the Merrimack") in the first engagement between ironclad warships.
