The FALL OF ATLANTA is announced in this two-page issue of the Richmond Examiner, from the capital of the Confederacy, Sept. 5, 1864. Also reported is the THIRD REMOVAL of Gen. Johnston. Interestingly, at this late date in the war, there is at least one ad for NEGROES WANTED to purchase, one ad for a $4,500 REWARD for the return of nine slaves that ran away “...the last of June with the Wilson raiding party,” and one listing four runaways caught and being kept in the Richmond jail. There are other slave-related stories: Aaron, an old slave, is given ten lashes for selling without a permit; Joe, a slave, is charged with “being out after hours” and Richard Hodges, a free negro, is charged with theft of household goods. Not only a great southern paper with historic content but also from the capital of the Confederacy.
