A great war-date Union soldier's letter, 7 1/2pp. 8vo., written, on Columbia patriotic stationery, by Pvt. Robert A. Hubbel, Co. K, 14th New York State Vols., Miner's Hill, [Va.], Dec. 26, [1861], reading, in part: "…myself and Spencer have built one together…from an old house we got brick and have a regular fireplace in which we cook our rations which…are plentifully dealt out to us. From the sutler we get our butter and molasses…we have so many different orders that it is hard to keep run…of our destination. I have had several conversations with Capt. [William H.] Seymour and he seems to know even less than we. The only way we judge these things is by the style of drill…our present ones indicate that when we go our brigade will be thrown in advance to act as skirmishers…we will go some distance in advance of the army and feel of them and try their strength and if too strong…we [will] fall back until the main forces come up. Yesterday the Garibaldi's [Guard, 39th N. Y. V.] got in a fight among themselves and in order to stop them another regiment had to be sent and fire upon them killing 6 and wounding several-cause whiskey…they got some across the river…it got the best of them…the 44th N. Y. S. V. [Ellsworth's-People's Avengers] had a burlesque dress parade yesterday…the renowned Bobby Hitchcock was colonel and one of the drummer's major they dressed in all the odd shapes they could…a more laughable thing you never saw…William Stone is in that regiment…England may make trouble but I hardly think we need fear it as she can settle it an easy way…we are holding a large force at bay…instead of weakening Manassas they are adding to their strength everyday thinking we intended those expeditions south to draw off troops and then attack Manassas…the boys all feel as though it w[ould be] murder to try….to advance on Manassas all I have talked with call t downright murder…Gen. McClellan will march around it if possible. I am for taking a large force…and give it to them…I am not my own master…R. A. Hubbel." Light soiling, else VG
