A great war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Robert A. Hubbel, Co. K, 14th New York State Vols., Miner's Hill, [Va.], Dec. 29, 1861, reading, in part: "…a march to Fairfax is anticipated every day and that will be certain to bring us in very close quarters with the enemy. From there to Centreville will be our next move from Centreville to Bull Run. Probably no place in the world is so strongly fortified naturally and artificially. Still I have confidence that McClellan will not move unless everything is ready. We will have a hard time taking it. A great many will leave their bones upon that spot and perhaps myself…I shall do my duty at all hazards…our brigade are being instructed in skirmish and bayonet drill….matters [with]…England may…deter the attack until spring…and the roads are certainly in better [condition] for the passage of artillery…they had been strengthening the right of our division by several Reg of artillery…the affair with England had been discussed and various opinions advanced…I think…we should give Mason & Slidell up. It is now known for what they were going and we can operate against them so they can do no harm…R. A. Hubbel." Light soiling, else VG
