A great war-date Union soldier's letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Robert A. Hubbel, Co. K, 14th New York State Vols., "before the Enemy's works at Yorktown, [Va.], Apr. 7, 1862," reading, in part: "…we are now laying, and waiting for artillery to come up, in a woods in front of the most strongly fortified place…the fortifications extend for about 2 miles…and are about 2 miles from Yorktown on the York River…we have given them until tomorrow to evacuate and they have sent back word to take it if we can…we came here by a river and were shelled all that day…our battery has had 4 or 5 [killed] and the 4th Mich. one and 3 or 4 wounded. The battle will commence in earnest tomorrow…they have commenced shelling and I must quit…R. A. Hubbel." Light soiling, else VG
