A great war-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 4to., written by Corp. Robert A. Hubbel, Co. K, 14th New York State Vols., Harrison's Landing, Va., July 26, 1862, reading, in part: "…we moved our camp from the shade of the woods to an open field and have…only 8 tents to the company…we are pretty well crowded…the Lancers (cavalry) were out in front about 8 miles and saw nothing of the enemy's pickets…across the river they have been seen. The other day…about sundown they brought a small field piece to the high ground…and the gun boats immediately fired on them when they withdrew more inland yet by balloon we know that they are there…they mean something…Porter's Corps was to be sent over there and skirmish through the woods to try their strength…last night a schooner laying in the river caught fire and burned to the waters edge. Other boats caught [fire] but were not so badly burned…the flames were put out before they done much damage. The schooner belonged to an associate of sutler's and a great quantity of goods were thrown over board…Robert A. Hubbel Co. K, 14th Regt. N. Y. S. Volunteers, Porter's Division, Harrison Landing, Va…PS the envelope is Blood and thunder but it was the only one I could find…excuse it and I will…do better next time." Light soiling, else VG
