A great war-date Union soldier's letter, 1 1/3pp. folio, written by Corp. Robert A. Hubbel, Co. K, 14th New York State Vols., Frederick City, Maryland, Sept. 17, 1862, reading, in part: "…many new regiments are coming to the front. We left Fort Buffalo, Va. on the 12th and marched to Washington …from there to Boonesbougher a few miles from Harpers Ferry where the fighting now is. Porter's Corps is in the fight today. We the 14th Regt. are laying here…as guard with 650 to 700 prisoners and…now waiting orders…the prisoners were taken between Middletown and Boonsbougher….Harpers Ferry was surrounded with 6,000 prisoners.The fighting is very severe. The Blue Ridge Mountains is literally covered with dead bodies, a most horrid sight. Our men drive them at every point . We are in good spirits and come what may are prepared to meet it…R. A.
