A great war-date Union soldier's letter, 2pp. folio, written by Corp. Robert A. Hubbel, Co. K, 14th New York State Vols.,"Camp near Sharpsburgh, Maryland, Oct. 17, 1862," reading, in part: "…about our reconnoissance over the [Potomac] river…we have been over…about 3 or 4 miles and encountered no enemy, procured some hay and grain…we had to ford the river which was knee deep…Lieut. [Fayette] Butler [WIA & POW Gaines Mill, Va 6/27/62 exchanged for Col. Gregg 7th Texas August 27, 1862] arrived here night before last. He is looking well…he will be appointed a captain in Co. C or H they both being without that officer, both being killed in the 7 days fights. I hear that one of Uncle George's sons is appointed lieutenant in the new Regt…I hope it is not a permanent appointment as he…is most too young…he can form no idea of what a solger has to go through…men who at home would be considered very hardy and tough are just the one's that cave in first…I admire that spirit which…leads him to accept a call from his country…we need the men and I suppose he might as well come as any, but he, even with a commission, will find it is not home…our Regt is now on a reconnoissance over the river with the division. We heard quite sharp fighting yesterday…it was our side shelling the woods as they advanced…near Boliver Heights…we had attacked and driven a portion of the enemy from the heights…our division was accompanied by a Regt of cavalry and several batteries…we took only 3 days rations…Col. [James] McQuade [brevet major general 3/13/65] left us this A. M. for Albany…expecting an appointment as Inspector General for the State of New York. I hope he will be able to get it for his own advancement and then I hope he may not…for I should hate to have him leave the regiment as the Lt. Col. would…be promoted Col. and he is not the man for the Regt. One of the boys in the company was taken crazy and we have just sent him to the hospital. His name is Edmond Smith [MO 5/23/63]…Robt. A. Hubbel." Minor soiling, else VG
