A great war-date Union soldier's letter, 2pp. folio, written by Corp. Robert A. Hubbel, Co. K, 14th New York State Vols.,"Camp near Warrenton, Va., Nov. 10, 1862," reading, in part: "…we started from camp near Sharpsburg…and marched to Harpers Ferry. Crossed there into Virginia and…down along the Potomac…camped at Snickersville…were on picket on the top of the mountains separating Loudan Valley from the Shenandoah Valley…our pickets were attacked and a skirmish ensued in which some 250 of our men were killed & wounded, leaving their we came by short marches to where we now are. Today we were reviewed by General McClellan and Burnside. Genl. McClellan is…going on the Peninsular to take command and Burnside is to command this army. The troops are very much down on a winter campaign…the old troops should be given time to recruit…most of our regiment are without overcoats and part without even good shoes. 3 or 4 in our company have shoes so bad as to almost walk on the bare feet…generally speaking it is rather rough…I hope the boys John Henry or William will not come out unless they are forced too. Soldiering is rather rough in the winter season…we are moving onto Richmond by the way of Gordonsville…Robt. A. Hubbel." Minor soiling, else VG
