A great war-date Union soldier's letter, 3 1/2pp. 4to., written by Corp. Robert A. Hubbel, Co. K, 14th New York State Vols.,"Camp near Falmouth, Va., Jan. 3, 1863," reading, in part: "we have been laying in the same old camp…a reconnoissance by our division…we started Dec. 30th and marched as far as Ellis Ford on the Rappahannock…for the purpose of cutting off the return of some of Stuart's Cavalry who had been up near Alexandria and captured 2 regiments of infantry and paroled them…we intended cutting them off…our division and Humphrey's division were sent to block every road…of return…at daylight on the 31st we started from Ellis Ford and marched about 6 miles on a road we thought they might come back on…they did succeed in almost running the men to death… our march was 44 miles in 26 hours…are one of the biggest marches we ever had. We arrived…on New Years eve a worn out lot of men…our brigade has gained the name of Griffin's Flying Brigade…we were on the lead going out…Genl. Griffin said to Patterson if you cant go faster than…let men pass…Griffin turned and said come boys if you want New Year's in camp and at it we went…2 miles an hour…[was] kept up all day…it is almost impossible to carry blankets etc enough to keep us warm when we have to sleep on the cold ground and…3 inches of mud…in fact we do not sleep only having up…there is another move on hand…whether is is a general movement or not I can not noel. I hope it maybe be mistaken as it would be rather rough to have to move in the cold weather…Robt. A. Hubbel." Light soiling, else VG
