A great war-date Union soldier's letter, 2 1/3pp. 4to., written by Corp. Robert A. Hubbel, Co. K, 14th New York State Vols.,"Camp near Falmouth, Va., Jan. 27, 1863," reading, in part: "…in my last I wrote that we on the eve of a move. It was started and we got about 5 miles…and the rain come and…the roads were so bad we could not go ahead or get back…we laid out in the woods 2 or 3 days until it stopped raining…then about faced and returned to our old camps…it has commenced raining again…we will lay for some time…as a small ran makes the roads so very bad that it is utterly impossible to move. Burnside…has been superseded by General Hooker our Corps commander. The Army of the Potomac…are in no condition to put in a very server fight…they are very much demoralized. The discipline and confidence in their leaders and a desire to meet the enemy…is changed and now all you hear is remarks of "I have seen my last battle" and :If they want to butcher me they must send me home to have it done"…the other day when Burnside passed…cries of "their goes the Fredericksburg murderer who killed my brother and father Burnside." He said nothing…the only man that can alter the feelings is McClellan. He the boys have confidence in and…if he does not win he at least will lose with less loss…the war is conducted very shabbily. The men fight as well as men can but it…seems as though all our affairs were immediately known to our enemy as at the ford we intended to cross…the Rebels had stuck up boards upon which was written "Burnside stuck in the mud" and "Come on you damn Yankees. We are ready for you." and such things as that…we should have more men. If they can not get volunteers they should draft…Robt. A. Hubbel." Light soiling, else VG
