War-date Union soldier’s Autograph Letter Signed by William Wallace, 4pp. quarto, Newport News, Virginia, March 17, 1862, and reads in part: ...During the fire of the 8th inst. a little incident connected with Shaw which Ill related. Shaw was standing in front of his quaters when a shell came whizzing over his head. At the same time one of the Mass men was walking by and fell down flat. Shaw immediately pitched into him for a (damned) coward. Get out of my sight. You ought to be shot et. In a little while afterwards Shaw and Montgomery were walking down the street when a shell came over making a tremendous noise whereupon both came down on all fours, Shaw sprawling....If the fire of the Rebels had not been so fearfully wild, the loss in our camp would have been very heavy. Lt. Morris has not as yet received the praise due him as a brave and gallant officer. He was the last man to leave the ship. Jumped overboard and had it not been for one of his officers would have met with a watery grave. Since the monitor’s arrival the Merrimac has not been seen....” More. Fine condition.
