Group of three letters pertaining to Colonel Francis W. Sabine, 11th Maine Infantry who was mortally wounded at the battle of Deep Bottom, and subsequently died on September 17, 1864. Includes: Official appointment letter for Col. Sabine, 2pp. quarto, May 10, 1861, State of Maine, Headquarters, “John L. Hodsdon Adjutant General and A.Q. General” and reads in small part “Col. Francis M. Sabine of Bangor, is hereby appointed by the Governor and Commander-in-Chief ....In the performance of this duty, Col. Sabine, will in all respects conform to military law and usage, so far as the same is consistent with the act aforesaid...” Fine condition....plus; Autograph Letter Signed by Col. Sabine, 10pp. octavo, Fernandina, Florida , September 18, 1863, with cover, addressed to his wife, it reads in part: “...Far away by night we see the rebel picket lights over on the main land, but there have been no dangerous collisions - no ‘shock of arms’ as yet...The Col’s new Fort is looking quite formidable done by the industry (poor fellows, they can’t help it) of the negro soldiers and thos lovely and interesting objects under my chage, the prisoners....They are under good subjection thanks to my lockups and handcuffs, and a ball & chain or so....” Fine condition...plus; Autograph Letter Signed by Col. Sabine, 6pp. octavo, Washington, February 24, 1862, with cover franked by Congressman John Hovey Rice, it reads in part: “...Alas! I am on another court martial & I shall be busy for a few days doing nothing but...Dont misunderstand me . I am not being tried but I am helping to try somebody else...” Very good condition.
