A good war-date Union artilleryman's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Henry D. Isbell, Battery A, 1st Ohio Light Artillery [MWIA Chickamauga, Ga., 9/19/64; DOW 10/16/64 buried in Chattanooga National Cemetery], Camp Drake, [Murfreesboro, Tenn.], Apr. 18, 1863, in part: "…Dr. Sayles is very bad off…cannot live but a few days…he is very happy and ready to go at anytime. He said he would like…me to stick to it and kill as many rebus as I could…he is one of the best men in the world, but that is what we have all got to come to sometime…we went out a forage one day about twenty miles from camp. We were ordered to take our positions in front of a house on top of a long hill. It was quite cold and I thought I would go into the house and get warm and see what I could find. Well I found two girls and an old woman that called herself a widow…she went to giving me fits. I told her that I understood all about these Southern widows…that most all of them were in the same fix, that were inside of our lines. Then the girls pitch in and we had a big time of it, but I was reinforced in a short time and the other boys went to talking to her and the girls. I thought that would be a good time to look about the house and so I went in then other rooms by myself. I found this bookend a bunch of keys on a stand…I put them in my pocket and walked out. You ,may think those keys never done me any good, but I find they will open most any smoke house and that is what we want…Henry Isbell." The original transmittal cover is included. VG
