A good war-date Union artilleryman's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Henry D. Isbell, Battery A, 1st Ohio Light Artillery [MWIA Chickamauga, Ga., 9/19/64; DOW 10/16/64 buried in Chattanooga National Cemetery], Camp Drake, [Murfreesboro, Tenn.], Apr. 27, 1863, in part: "…we want to get out of this place…most of the troop that were here…moved somewhere…our drill is playing out…our officers think it is mutch like work. [1st Lt. Wilber F.] Goodspeed [promoted major 10/20/1864] had a big drunk about a week ago. He had better be a little careful or he will get reported again, but it wont do much good in our division for all the officer get drunk. It is not so in the other divisions, at least, that is what I have been told…my shirts and boots are getting poor again. I don't know which would be best to draw them here or get them from home. You can do as you like…I can draw boots here but they are not very good ones. I should have got me a pair of B. K. David but out of the whole box there was not a pair that would fit. I lost my boots at the fight [Stones River] and those you bought me are not worth putting on…H. D. Isbell. VG
