War-date Union soldier’s letter by Lt. Benjamin Wright, 10th Connecticut Infantry, 4pp. folio, Morris Island, South Carolina, July 27, 1863, and reads in part: “...the Rebs began to shell us from Fort Sumter and Cunnings Point Battery. Every fifteen minutes through the night would throw a shell over at us...probably they threw as many as five hundred shells at us during the day...Our great loss is Col. Legget and I think he lost his through carelessness. He exposes himself unecessarily, he was feeling pretty well this morning. We feel his loss very much just now, a brave officer and a better officer, when he was sober never lived. If any man could bring a Regt. out of a tight place Col. Legget was the man that could do it. ...some of the men in our Co. hada very narrow escaped. They were saved by a stick of timber which was struck by a solid shot, as it were they were bruised some what. Two of their guns were smashed all to pieces, another shell struck...it cover Lieut Marshall, another buried ten men so that they had to be dug out...The Gen. is trying to take Charleston with altogether too few men...” Much more. Fine condition.
