War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. slightly smaller than 4to., written by Pvt. Robert Henry Greenfield, Co. I, 130th New York Vols., [n. p., but Bottoms Bridge, Va.], July 5, 1863, to his wife, in part: "…we are laying in an orchard in front of the enemy about one mile from Bottom Bridge. We have had several skirmishes with the enemy. One of the boys in Co. G was shot through the shoulder…a slight wound. He was on picket on the outpost and did not attend to his business…let a Reb cavalryman come up within 5 rods of him and shoot at him first…if it had of been me I would of got the first shot…we will either advance or return to White House Landing…there is some prospects of this war closing before our time expires for I do not think it can be carried on two years longer…Robert H. Greenfield…". The original transmittal cover is included. VG
