A rare Civil War Michigan colonel's letter, 1p. 4to., written by brevet Brigadier General and Col. ROBERT HORATIO GEORGE MINTY (1831-1906) commander of the 4th Michigan Cavalry who is best remembered for commanding the forces that captured Jefferson Davis at the end of the war near Irwinsville, Georgia, addressed to brevet Lt. Col. Robert Burns of the 4th Michigan Cavalry, reading, in part: "…[Brevet Major George W.] Lawton was with me a few evenings ago & expressed the opinion that you had gone east for the purpose of perpetuating matrimony….allow me to wish you all joy & happiness. Genl. Robertson is getting up a history of Michigan regiments & I had written me for information. Will you lend me the rebel paper giving the account of our fight with [CSA Gen. Joseph] Wheeler on 21st June 1864. I will take good care of it and return it O. K. R. H. G. Minty. Lawton has received his brevet for gallant conduct at Dallas on 24th May."
