Autograph Letter Signed “Mary” 4pp. octavo, Springfield, April 16, 1865, and reads in part: “...I think you with all the rest of the people feel that you have lost a personal friend in the death of Mr. Lincoln. The services at church this morning were like funeral services; the church was trimmed with black and the whole congregation was bowed down with grief. Mr. Parsons read the 140th & 146th Psalms and his text was Luke 24 : 21st & 27th verses...It was the best sermon I ever heard...We left Washington Friday night at 7-1/2 o’clock and did not hear the news until we arrived at Jersey City. I never saw so great a change come over a company of people. Men turned pale and their teeth chattered as if they had the ague and there was scarcely a word spoken above a whisper ...Everything in New York seemed paralyzed...” Fine condition.
