A rare printed political ballot being a ca.1868 Indiana governor's ballot advocating Conrad Baker (1817-1885) for that state's governor. Baker who was born in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, attended Gettysburg College and studied law under Thaddeus Steven's Gettysburg law office. After being admitted to the bar, Conrad opened his own office in Gettysburg and raised a small family there. Moving to Indiana, he helped raise the 1st Indiana Cavalry when the Civil War broke out. Later then Indiana governor Oliver Morton appointed him provost marshal of his state. Popular he, himself, ran for governor of Indiana in 1868 and won a close election over Thomas Hendricks.
