A Revolutionary War period man's leather wallet with tooled designs and brass closure clasp and escutcheon. Attached contemporary paper label on lower left corner, reading: "Presented by Miss. Abbie M. Choate" with bold No. "18" affixed to the top flap. Miss. Abbie M. Choate (born 1837 Derry, New Hampshire-?) was a granddaughter of James Choate (born 1761, Ipswich, Mass.-died, 1846 Derry, N. H.) who was among the picked men selected to row the troops across the river after the battle of Long Island. He served under Major Burnham on the retreat from the Battle of Long Island, August 27, 1776, and rendered effective service. He also witnessed the execution of Andre. Private, Colonel N. Wade's Regiment, July-December, 1778, at Rhode Island; also In the expedition against Newport. Enlisted in the Continental Army July 5, 1780; served to December 14, 1780. As a daughter of the Revolution member Abbie Choate was, no doubt, proud of her grandfather's service and most likely had given his wallet on loan to one of the many patriotic exhibit celebrations that sprang up throughout north during the Civil War or shortly after during centennial in 1876.
