War-date Confederate soldier's letter, 1p. 4to., written by Pvt. Charles P. Seyler, 3rd Battalion South Carolina Infantry, Gardner's Corner, South Carolina, 1/28/61, in part: "…we have moved four times since we have been here. We moved from Poctaligo to Gardner's Corner and the about a mile back…I will tell you about standing guard. Twelve of us stand at musket's point…in the fork of Poctaligo and Broad river besides other places twenty four hours…I was shot at by the Yankee pickets. Thank god they did not hit me nor none of the rest that was with us. [I] did not get a shot at them but I wont to git a feel at them yet…we are trying to make up a company for the Confed[eracy] for twelve months. They want regiments maid up for the Confedrid. W will get better fur and mack our time shorter and beter ever…direct yore let ters to pocotaligo post ofis, Camp Martin, in cur of Captain Purcivill [Edward S. Percival]…Charles P. Seyler…". The 3rd South Carolina Battalion went on the fight in many of the Army of Northern Virginia's battles including at the Peach Orchard, Gettysburg were they lost nearly twenty percent of some of the 200 who reported for duty that day.
