A great pre-printed Georgia oath of allegiance issued on August 22, 1865 to former Confederate soldier Corp. James H. Waters, Co. H, 8th Georgia Infantry State Guards which was formed at Macon, Georgia. Printed by the Daily Telegraph Book and Job Office, Macon, reading, in part: "I James Waters…do solemnly swear…that I will henceforth faithfully defend the Constitution of the United States and the Union of the States…and fatefully support all Laws and Proclamations which have been made during the existing rebellion with reference to the Emancipation of the Slaves. So help me God." Signed and made official by Capt. George W. Smith 90th New York Vols. as assistant provost marshall. Negligible insect chews, else VG. Also included is a pre-printed "State of Georgia" tax being a tax bill issued in early 1864 to Waters for his cattle. (2 items)
