Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Altus H. Jewel [WIA Fredericksburg, Va., May 3, 1863], Co. E, 77th New York Vols., Hagerstown, Md., Oct. 28, 1862, in part: "…we are allowed to go a mile from camp. There is no guard around our camp except the provost guard and they are a company of cavalry that are detailed for the purpose. If they find anyone more than a mile from the camp without a pass they take them back and have them court marshaled…the rebels come over almost every day…and surrender. There were seventeen come over in one day. They are ragged and they say that they are starving. They say that they don't care where they take them if they will have enough to eat and some clothes to wear. The Quarter Master General has been ordered to supply us with large tents or boards to build…shanties…the corn looks more like trees than it does like corn…the people around here are most all Dutch and they don't look like our people. They are dark skinned and they look ignorant. The houses are lathed and plastered the same outside as ours inside. That is the majority…when we were coming…when we came into a good looking country….[at] good looking houses they would wave their handkerchiefs and cheer us…when we came into a rough looking place and poor buildings they would not notice us. They would turn their heads and act as if there was no one passing. We passed within forty rods of the rebel pickets coming from Harpers Ferry to Sharpsburg, but we did not know it…but Lieutenant Smith did…direct…Altus H. Jewel, 77 Regt. N. Y. S. V., Smith's Division, Third Brigade…care of Lieu[t.] Loveland." With fully detailed transcription. Light soiling, else VG
