War-date Union brevet brigadier general's battle letter, 2pp., oblong 8vo., written by then 1st Lieut. John Willian, Jr. (1835-1869), Co. D, 6th New Jersey Vols., "Camp 6th Reg. N. J. V., June 2, [1862]," in part: "…we have moved from our camp & been in another engagement. We were brought up to support Genl. Casey's division which acted very badly. Genl. Hooker says the 5th, 6th N. J. Vols. saved the battle. Our Regt. lost 24 killed, wounded & missing. The loss in our company was very light, none killed or wounded only one missing. John Gannon is the one missing…since writing the above we have moved again and are now in line of battle expecting the enemy's every movement. There has been an order given…that the word retreat will not be given today…J. Willian." Light soiling, else VG
