War-date Union brevet brigadier general's battle letter, 2 1/4pp., 8vo., written by then Capt. John Willian, Jr. (1835-1869), Co. C, 6th New Jersey Vols., "Camp 6th Reg. N. J. V., Alexandria, [Va.], Sept. 4, [1862]," in part: "…I have no doubt you heard all about out tremendous battles. We have fought three battles since we came to reinforce Genl. Pope…have now retired to Alexandria to recruit…we may be called out again…our Gloster companies have suffered very severely again. Sergeant Young is missing, William Groves missing, Levi Jess missing, Thomas Bottomly missing, Aaron Stone missing. Co. K Sergeant Corcoran missing, Bill Bisbing supposed to be killed, Robert McAdoo wounded…[many more casualties]…some of the above may turn up any day. I hope they will. My own Co. lost 2 men killed, 2 wounded & 7 missing. We have lost one of our best Genl. [Phil] Kearney. Genl. Hooker has been taken away from us to command a Corp de Army. He is good…J. Willian…".
