Manuscript Document by Union Soldier “A. Shaw” entitled “Reminsence of the War,” eighteen pages, folio, with one portion covering November and December 1862 and the other April 1863, with content in part: “...landed at a point called Indian Point and there we received the first fire from the enemy that we had seen. They had two pieces of artillery posted to receive us. We had to land under the fire...drove them off...landed all of our heavy guns and soon had the field to ourselves...followed on the double quick...we were drawn up in line of battle...we would receive a stray shot through our ranks just to remind us that the enemy were in our front in force but they were so far off and the darkness prevented their doing any damage...we were marched about 3 miles...found the enemy entrenced in a piece of woods and our Regt was marched up across an open field in the face of two pieces of artillery, until we were in musket range, then they open on us with their small arms...we were ordered to lie down and fire at will and for about forty minutes it was very lively shooting. Then the 25 Connecticut came upon our right to help us and the 159 NY came up to assist us, about that time the enemy came out through the cane break and on our right flank, that placed us in a cross fire....about that time our Lieut Col. was shot through the shoulder...we were ordered to fall back...we lost 1/4 of our regt in killed and wounded...” Fine condition.
