Union soldier's letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Altus H. Jewel [WIA Fredericksburg, Va., May 3, 1863], Co. E, 77th New York Vols., "Camp near White Oak Church, Va., Jan. 16, 1863", in part: "…we had quite a heavy rain last knight…some of the boys had to bale the tents out this morning…there were a death in Company D yesterday. His name was [Pvt. Wilson] Barton [36 years old] from Providence [R. I.]…he was sitting in his tent and the company cook had been making some soup. He took his cup & was going to get some. He fell over back in a sort of [a] fit or something…and died in five minutes. He had been complaining some but was not considered bad off. He hardly knew what hurt him. I will put a lock of my hair in this letter. It is not very long but…you can use it…A. H. Jewel." With fully detailed transcription. Light soiling, else VG
