Union soldier's letter, 6pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Altus H. Jewel [WIA Fredericksburg, Va., May 3, 1863], Co. E, 77th New York Vols., White Oak Church, Va., Feb. 25, 1863, in part: "…your letter…was brought out to me…on the picket line…our vedette post…is five men and a corporal…we…have to stand but five hours in the twenty four…we are divided into three…squads…are held to reinforce the lie if it should be attacked…the little reserve is about fifty rods from the vedette post…you basked if I got lousy…we all get them…we cant keep them off…they are something like hen lice only larger and they live on the ground. The[y] do not get in the hair, but on the body and they lay their nits on our clothes. If a man takes pains to keep his clothes clean…he can keep them pretty much off…I suppose that you think that it is an awful thing, but we don't think nothing of it…John Hen. Reynolds was here…now there is citizens…from the North every few days…Bill is eight corporal…I will send you a ring if I can get a piece of laurel to make it…A. H. Jewel…".
