Union soldier's Gettysburg Campaign letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Altus H. Jewel [WIA Fredericksburg, Va., May 3, 1863], Co. E, 77th New York Vols., "Pennsylvania, July 8, 1863," in part: "…we are now in Pennsylvania near the line between Pennsylvania and Maryland on the turnpike from Gettysburg…eight miles from Hagerstown. We are now at…Antietam Creek on picket. It is raining hard…we are in a barn under cover. The fight at Gettysburg was a hard one and a heavy loss to the rebels. Our regiment did not…loose any. Our brigade have followed the rebels right up. We have taken a good many stragglers…we have been within two…miles of the rebels rear guard all the way. I lost all the money I had…thirty dollars. I had it out of my pocket to get some chance…I could not find it…we went into the woods…one of the boys was going to get some bread…I gave him some change to get me some…then I missed the money…it seems bad, but we have all got to have our ups and downs so I shan[t] burrow any…about it…better been money than my life as many a man did in the fight…I can get some to use until you can send me some. Send me some as soon as you can…I am glad that I…honestly…lost it…and not by gambling as a good many do in the army. I lost my pocket book two or three times so I took…[to] put it into the watch pocket in my pants…I will now put a pocket in my shirt. The Rebels destroy everything they come to. They take all the horse and cattle etc..I hate to have money sent to me when I get thirteen dollars a month, but the loss…makes quite a difference…A. H. Jewel…". With fully detailed transcription. VG
