A great printed 1864 Republican Presidential campaign letter directed towards the soldiers of Michigan while in field imploring them to use their commonsense and vote for Abraham Lincoln in November's election, entitled: "To The Soldiers of Old Washtenaw," [Co. Michigan], this document calls the soldiers to stand up for the policies of Abraham Lincoln and thus continue their fight for the freedom of slave and democracy. The document reads, in very small part: "…when you went forth to the field…we bade you farewell…we have watched your course in arms with intense interest…while we wait…a new duty devolves on you. Though soldiers you are still citizens. The ballot is our ordinary weapon…misplaced traitors in Michigan have done all they could to exclude you, while in the field, from this right…commissioners will visit you in camp…prepared to instruct you in the forms of voting…issues…at Baltimore and Chicago have been put forth…the Union men at Baltimore have set forth…their condemnation of rebellion…from Chicago…comes no word of censure for rebels in arms-no condemnation of treason…they say nothing against treason, nothing in favor of those who are defending the nation's life…you cannot fight for your country and vote a cessation of hostilities…we know you will cast no such vote. The Baltimore platform…meets fairly and patriotically…deals in councils with the rebels…and gives the pledge that your labor and blood shall not be spent in vain…use the ballot…as you do the bullet…vote…to secure the fruit of your hard-earned victories…may the day not be distant when…the Union [is] re-established, treason punished…and peace and prosperity smile again upon 'The Land of The Free and The Home of The Brave.'
