War-date Autograph Letter Signed “Clara Barton” 1pp. octavo, addressed to Mrs. Cornelia Wilbur, Washington D.C. May 19, 1865, and reads “Please give the No. of the Artillery to which your son was attached.” With second autograph in return address directive. Fine condition. John R. Wilbur, 13th New York Heavy Artillery, died of disease at Norfolk, Virginia, April 16, 1865. BARTON, Clarissa "Clara" Harlowe (1821-1912) was a pioneering nurse who founded the American Red Cross. She was a hospital nurse in the American Civil War, a teacher, and patent clerk. Nursing education was not very formalized at that time and Clara did not attend nursing school, so she provided self-taught nursing care. Barton is noteworthy for doing humanitarian work at a time when relatively few women worked outside the home.
