Union soldiers letter written by “S(amuel) F. Burrell, who enlisted October 17, 1861, at Darnestown, Md.; mustered in as private, Company K, October 17, 1861, to serve three years; appointed saddler, no date given; re-enlisted December 16,1863; transferred to Com pany B, July 12, 1865; to Company B, First N.Y. Mounted Rifles, July 21, 1865. datelined Princess Anne C.H. march 3, 1865, 4pp., to a friend. Burrell responds to question of the end of the war, in part, “I have no idea when this war will end but I hope and believe that it will not end until the Rebellion is subdued and those Southern traitors brought to justice. It may take a long time .... it may be brought to an end by fighting one great battle with the combined forces of Grant and Sherman on one side and the combined forces of Lee Beauregard and Johnston on the other. Everything looks favorable for it ... They dare not fight with Sherman but keep backing up towards Richmond ...”
