James Burton Pond (1838-1903) 1860 Lincoln Wide Awake supporter who enlisted in the 3rd Wisconsin Cavalry with two younger brothers in 1861. A. L. S., New York, Dec. 15, 1895 on Pond's letterhead. Pond was awarded the Medal of Honor for "extraordinary heroism...in action at Baxter Springs, Kansas....[he] was surprised and attacked by several times his own number of guerillas, but gallantly rallied his men, and after a severe struggle drove the enemy outside the fortifications. First Lieutenant Pond then went outside the works, and, alone and unaided, fired a howitzer three times, throwing the enemy into confusion and causing him to retire." VG
