HAWKINS, Rush Christopher (1831-1920) was a lawyer, Union colonel in the American Civil War, politician, book collector, and art patron. In 1861, Hawkins helped raise the 9th New York Infantry, a Zouave-styled regiment, popularly known as "Hawkins Zouaves" for service in the Civil War. Hawkins was appointed colonel of the regiment on May 4, 1861 and served with distinction in North Carolina early in the war. Autograph Letter Signed “Rush Hawkins” 3pp. octavo, on embossed stationery, addressed to Mr. Benjamin, and reads in small part: “...Unitl I read your charming “Coming Home” I had not know of your capacity for expression in verso...I wish to send you many thanks for giving me the pleasure of reading those four verses...” Very good condition.
