An unusual war-date, ca. 1864, CDV published by Daguerre Manufacturing Co., New York, depicting Union General William T. Sherman's bust superimposed a copy of his evacuation terms given to the citizens of Atlanta shortly before he captured the city in Sept. 1864. The published letter, reads, in small part: "Letter of General Sherman to the Mayor and Councilmen of Atlanta refusing to allow the Women and Children to remain in that City…yet shall not revoke my order…my orders are not designed to meet the humanities of the case, but…we must have peace…in all America. To secure this we must stop the war…the use of Atlanta for warlike purposes is inconsistent…as a home for families…I can only renew my offer of services to make their exodus…as easy…as possible…war is cruelty, and you cannot refine it…those who brought war on our country deserve all curses…a people can pour out…I myself have seen…thousands of women and children fleeing from your armies…with bleeding feet…when peace does come you may call on me for anything…now, you must go, and take the old and feeble…W. T. Sherman, Major General.". Near fine.
