A good war-date, ca. 1864, 1/9th plate tintype of a seated Union private wearing an opened sack coat that exposes lightly red tinted battle shirt. On the edge of his coat's left side opening is a "Gault" style (named for the period encased postage stamps produced by John Gault as coinage) campaign badge. The image is housed in its original leatherette case with an embossed, in gold, patriotic lady liberty design on the lid. The stamped brass preserver is also patriotic in design being a military motif showing flags, a drum, cannon and bearing the legend, "The Union Now and Forever."
