Wonderful salt print photograph of Mexican War surgeon In General Taylor’s Division S. Compton Smith, who authored “Chile Con Carne, or the camp and the Field,” in 1857. This photograph of a seated Compton Smith in uniform, is hand tinted and signed in the lower border “Very truly yours S. Compton Smith” Double-glazed with John Westin Perkins of Baltimore photographer’s label on verso, identifying the subject as Dr. Smith and dates it to September 10, 1861. Framed. Fine condition.
