A great early Kentucky frontier letter, written by Connecticut born Noah S. Pond (1815-1875) whose brothers were Gideon Hollister and Samuel William Pond both of whom were early Minnesota settlers and missionaries among the region's Dakota Sioux Tribes, 3pp. 4to., New Design, [Trigg Co.], Kentucky, Feb. 12, 1837, to his brother-in-law Jonathan N. Hine, reading, in part: "…I am still at New Design…where I have been for the last four months. My health is not the best…I am under the care of a physician and am in hopes…in a few weeks…[to] be able to travel…a man cannot live in Kentucky for nothing unless he can do something. The doctors here charge fifty cents a mile for visiting a patient (medicine extra) and I am 8 miles from one…Mr. McAllister and wife and all the family are very kind to me and I am treated as well as can be expected…Mrs. Mc says she will take care of me as well as she would her own…the neighbors…that live 4 & 5 fives off come to see me very often. The climate…is decidedly the poorest…I was ever in…the northern part of the state are very healthy, but here they have the Fever & Ague (or chills and fevers as they are called) enough to shake the bones…I have got a Tartar plaister the whole length of my back and side which is fired sore. The people are ploughing and fixing for sowing oats…I would not settle in Kentucky if I was going to leave Conn. I would go to Missouri or Arkansas. Land is too high here to settle on now…tell Clark that he must go to school and get to be a priest and come down here and teach school & preach for they don't have much of either here…Noah S. Pond…". Attached is the original transmittal panel with an unrecorded postal postmark of "New Design, Ky. Feb. 14, 1837." This cover and the other Noah Pond letters in this catalog all have transmittal covers with "New Design" post marks and are perhaps the only ones in existence! Light soiling, else VG.
